09/01/05 MARK WRIGHT TO SUPPORT FOLK LEGEND RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOT
There aren't too many people in this world who can cite Paul McCartney, Elton John and The Rolling Stones as among their biggest fans. There aren't too many people who can say they've written songs whilst sitting in the back of Johnny Cash's car, learnt folk music from Woodie Guthrie and have Bob Dylan as one of his contemporaries. Ramblin' Jack Elliot is truly a legend who has influenced generations of musicians and songwriters the world over with a career spanning six decades. Of the all the accolades Ramblin' Jack has been given throughout his career perhaps the greatest of them all happened when he was invited to receive the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton.
Over in the UK to collect a lifetime achievement award Ramblin' Jack will be embarking on a six date tour of the UK and Ireland in February which will feature Mark Wright as support for entire six-date tour. March 2005 will see Vini 'Mad Dog' Lopez coming to the UK for his first ever UK tour with his band Steel Mill Retro. Although offered a recording contract Springsteen decided to pursue his career as a solo artist but asked Vini to join the line up with the original E Street Band playing hundreds of gigs and recording the albums 'Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.' and 'The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle' featuring many classic Springsteen songs that many fans consider unsurpassed such as 'Rosalita' and 'Incident On 57th Street'. Mark Wright to record at the legendary Sun Studios, Memphis , Tennessee - April 21st It was 50 years ago that Elvis Presley walked into Sun Studios and changed the face of popular culture forever when he recorded his first single for Sun Records, 'That's Alright Mama' in the Spring of 1954. Among some of the artists who have recorded here are the great Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, U2, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many, many others.
Mark will be recording with local musicians and the session will be engineered by the current Chief Engineer of Sun Studios, James Lott. The material will almost certainly have a country feel to it and expect to hear cover versions of tracks by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash as well as some original material also. More session details as we get them but expect a release of some sort (possibly a mini-album) by the end of the year. Updated February 24th 2004

Updated December 23rd 2003
"Can anyone here name all four of The Beatles?" Coteford Junior School, Pinner, Middlesex - 16th December 2003 This year I have played at many different venues from The Borderline in London to The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. However, this has to be to be one of the most challenging performances I have had to give thus far! In front of the entire year six of the Coteford Junior School in Pinner, Middlesex I performed an unplugged acoustic set for their 'Sixties Day' and many of the children had come along to school in 60's fancy dress. Due to the main hall being used for the school nativity we all had to cram into one of the classrooms where for an hour I discussed the popular music of the sixties and how it's affected the music of today. I sung songs from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Doors and The Kinks before requests to hear one of my own songs. I inevitably performed 'Back To School' (click here for the lyrics) which seemed to go down very well indeed! The children were a fantastic audience and their knowledge of popular music really suprised me considering the music I was playing and discussing was originally performed 40 years before they were born! Their parents must have great record collections!
Updated December 11th 2003 BACK TO SCHOOL! Many of you will be familiar with Mark's song 'Back To School'; well for one day only he gets to do just that! On Tuesday 16th December Mark will be taking a 1-hour assembly at Coteford Junior School in Pinner, Middlesex on the history of popular music. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and a chair Mark will be taking questions on the history of popular music and will perform a selection of cover songs and his own compositions to an audience of 5 - 11year old school children! Mark's fee for this performance is believed to be two gold stars. Updated November 20th 2003 For those of you that couldn't make The Borderline gig last month several new pictures have been added to the gallery taken by the ever-fantastic Harry Scott.
