Ring of Fire Written by June Carter & Merle Kilgore
'I always thought this was one of Johnny Cash's best songs although it always seemed like it might be quite a difficult song to cover. Johnny Cash is such an enigmatic artist that to do any of his songs justice is especially hard to do. However, I thought the song would lend itself to a more straightforward rhythmic rock arrangement, although we did stick to the traditional Johnny Cash 'boom-chukka-boom-chukka' feel in the verses! Great melodic bass playing on this song! It was also quite a hard song to sing as it's actually very difficult to sing a Johnny Cash song without sounding like Johnny Cash! Johnny knew what he was doing when he wrote this song and the trick is not to try and push the lyric too hard and to just let the song flow.
(Above) Recording the Johnny Cash song 'Ring of Fire'. 'Ring of Fire' was probably the song we worked on the most in the studio before recording; it was a total of about 40 minutes before we got a final take!
